As the Opéra Garnier is under renovation,
artist JR imagined a collaborative project in
two acts to take advantage of the
scaffoldings hiding the facade of the
historical building.
For Act 1, one morning Paris woke up to a cavern photo montage, covering the scaffoldings. Every
week-end night, ballets and short films were projected on the picture while the whole square was filled with the crowd watching.
At the same time, the preparation for Act 2 began. For this part, the House of Chanel ordered Le19M's
embroidery house Atelier Montex, along with JR, to create a free participative workshop, where people could
come and embroider their own handprint. Their handworks will then be assembled, to create the next visual
covering the Opera on the 12th of November 2023.
+5000 handprints, embellished by the people, gathered to create an immense artwork.
